Title :   15: Alcohols II
Video Description :
Alcohols II includes an extensive list of reactions and analysis. A section addressing balancing organic oxidation-reduction reaction is included. Alcohols are introduced as lead players in the role of synthesis development. The reactions addressed include dehydration, substitution, alkoxide formation, oxidation, reduction, esterification, tosylation, and the Pinacol rearrangement. In dehydration, the use of phosphoryl chloride is introduced and how dehydration using that reagent differes from dehydration with sulfuric acid is noted. The mechanism for dehydration using phosphoryl chloride is detailed. Substiution vs. Elimination is constantly reviewed. Pyridinium chlorochromate, and other oxidizing agents, as well as the Jones reagent are treated. Fisher esterification is introduced and the elegant Pinacol rearrangement brings together many aspects of alcohol reactions. A straight-forward method of balancing oxidation-reduction reactions is presented at the end of this unit.
